Native Youth Leadership

For many years, the Lummi CEDAR Project coordinated the Native Youth Leadership Program, which worked out of the former YESS (Youth Empowerment Social Services) summer school program and the Lummi Youth Academy. Under the Leadership of Shasta Cano-Martin and Misty L. Kopplin, there were many young people who were positively impacted by the learning and leadership opportunities facilitated under the umbrella of the Lummi CEDAR Project. Shasta and Misty K. were themselves graduates of the Native Youth Leadership Program.

In recent years, the Lummi CEDAR Project has participated in the Intertribal Canoe Journey (as a capstone event for the Native Youth Leadership Program), with the Cedar Spirit Canoe and Cedar Spirit Canoe Family, with the guidance of James “Smitty” and Lutie Hillaire. The Lummi CEDAR Project holds dearly the principle of “Youth Driven, Adult Supported, Elder Guided,” work and we deeply value the teachings and wisdom of the elders who have helped guide the work.
